I have been in business for just over two years and in that time have gone from being the smallest franchise in New Zealand to the largest. I was made redundant from my job in software development and did a lot of investigation before I bought into Mr Rental. It’s a very busy business to run, there is a lot to it, and you have to pay close attention to the detail, but the system works, as long as you follow it. When you sign someone up to a rental agreement, they are paying you every week. You have constant cash flow. That’s the strength of the system. The recurring revenue means that you can go on a two-week holiday to Europe, and as long as you have someone taking care of the direct debits, you are still making money. A strong, well-trained team is essential. Given that it’s such a busy job, it’s not possible to do everything yourself, therefore you have to rely on your team and the better the team is, the better the store will perform. I have also had huge input from my Mr Rental business coach, which has no doubt been a factor in my success.

I was not really looking to be part of a franchise when I discovered Mr Rental, but I liked the business model. The recurring revenue was the key bit: you make one sale and it keeps on paying you. The other benefit is being part of a network. I have made some awesome friends in the group, which means when you have a problem, there are around 50 fellow franchisees you can ring for advice, who have experienced the same problem, and you deal with it together. I have enjoyed that side of it, and also the support of a head office you can ring anytime – that is something you don’t get in small business. Mr Rental also offers a good work/life balance. My family is a major priority for me, spending time with them, and I have achieved this because I have managers in each store. I trained them to the level required, and I myself have now moved up to a more strategic, guiding role in the business. The day-to-day operations happen without me, allowing me to take time off with the kids during school holidays.

We recently celebrated our Toowoomba store’s 10th anniversary, and will soon mark a decade at our Ipswich store. Both stores are performing well, the result of hard work, having the right teams and the recurring revenue generated by the business. Our stores are part of their communities, and we help people by supplying all sorts of solutions. Corporate clients are a growing part of the business, such as short-term executive rentals – we furnish mining houses for contractors in Dalby, Chinchilla and Roma, and supply fridges and freezers for the grain harvest in western Queensland. I was a fourth-generation farmer with no retail background when I came to Mr Rental, but they offer training and ongoing support to help you achieve your business goals. They are a company who listens. Being part of a network is also a plus, as there are always other franchisees I can call for advice or ideas. Being a five-days-a-week operation, the business has also allowed us to spend time with our children, and watch them grow up. For us, Mr Rental has been a good family business.
